ALGECIRAS: Spanish energy company Cepsa, owned by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, has supplied 100 tonnes of second-generation biofuel for 84 trips by Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea (NAT) ferries from Algeciras to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa.

This is the first time a Spanish ship operator is using this type of sustainable fuel, produced at Cepsa's San Roque Energy Park from agricultural waste.

“We continue to promote sustainable mobility as one of the pillars of our strategic growth,” says director of Marine Fuel Solutions Samir Fernández. “With initiatives like these and the ones we are rolling out in air and rail transport, we are progressing towards our goal of becoming the leading biofuels producer in Spain and Portugal.”

Second-generation biofuels can be used in ships without engine modifications and can reduce emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional fossil fuels.

This latest insetting initiative will avoid over 63 tons of CO2 emissions as NAT ferries sail from Algeciras with up to 15 percent drop-in renewable biodiesel.

The European Commission’s “Fuel EU Maritime” legislation requires EU maritime transport to cut emissions by 2.0 percent in 2025, 6.0 percent in 2030 and 80 percent by 2050, compared to 2020 levels.
