COPENHAGEN: Chinese energy developer Goldwind is to supply A.P. Moller - Maersk with 500,000 tonnes annually of ‘green’ bio-methanol and e-methanol.

First volumes are expected in 2026 utilising wind energy to produce the new fuel from a facility in Hinggan League, 1000 kilometres northeast of Beijing.

Maersk will take delivery of its first 16,000 TEU methanol-enabled (dual use) vessel in the first quarter of 2024 and 11 more by the end of 2025.

“We are encouraged by the agreement because its scale and price confirm our view that green methanol currently is the most viable low-emission solution for ocean shipping that can make a significant impact in this decade,” explained Rabab Raafat Boulos, Maersk Chief Infrastructure Officer.

“However, we still have a long way to go in ensuring a global green fuels market that can enable the decarbonisation of global shipping,” he added.

Maersk says it aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its business by 2040.
